Kites, Boards and Lots of Pictures

I’ve posted before about trying kite boarding. I’ve spent lots of time and money on this hobby for very little reward. I have a short attention span so usually I would have given up by now but for some reason I kept trying and it FINALLY paid off!

I went to the beach to try kite boarding after work recently. This time was different since I was on the land instead of in the water so a smaller and less intimidating kite is used which helped tremendously. On the land you use a mountain board which is kinda like a skateboard but for off road. The gods must have been on my side since the winds, sand and sun were all favorable that day. So I put the trainer size kite in the air and was feeling a slight pull down the beach from it. It started off slow…so slow walkers were going past me. But hey they were power walkers! My friend and coach told me I needed a bigger kite but I was scared. Finally after seeing the backside of countless power walkers I reluctantly agreed. The bigger kite made all the difference and I was cruising along at around 15-20 mph. I was so excited and happy that I was singing as I zigged and zagged down the beach. This is such a fun sport and great for me since it combines the beach, sun, bikinis and lots of upper body exercise all into one fun filled activity.

But wait there’s more! I have to admit I’m a bit of a show off or ham as some might say. Well I guess kite boarding is still somewhat new and definitely an attention grabber with the huge colorful kites in the sky that can be seen for close to a mile. Several people saw me and decided I was picture worthy! Yep a British couple, Asian lady and several others stopped to take photos. With my limited control I don’t think they realized they were putting themselves in danger but thankfully no harm was done. I felt like a celebrity which made me feel great and added to my joy of this sport. I think my monthly hamming it up needs were met that day!

I still have a long way to go but it was a blast! I can’t wait to do it again and get in more vacation pictures!

One way or another...

One way or another. I’m gonna find. I’m gonna getcha getcha getcha. Maybe Next week…. If you haven’t figured it out yet, these are lyrics to a Blondie song. Tini and I sang our hearts out to this lovely song… well it was lovely before we sang it. Don’t get me wrong, Tini sings pretty well, I on the other hand sound like the seagull from The Disney move Ariel.. .. In other words Horrible.
But I LOVE Tini and she has always wanted to have the courage to sing Karaoke (don’t ask me way…she is a bit crazy that way, but that’s why we love her). So, being the good friend I am, I volunteer to sing with her. Mind you, I have NEVER sang Karaoke and I could’ve went the rest of my life without singing Karaoke, but I did it for her (those poor people in the audience).
When she asked if we could do it another time, I said “Tini, This is probably the only chance you will have to get in on stage to sing in front of people. So you better take me up on it” Tini, being the wise women she is, did.
“What song should we sing” Tini asks me.
“I don’t care, Pick on” I replied, because I knew It didn’t matter, I was going to sound awful. Besides how hard could reading from a teleprompter be?
Tini Picked One way or another by Blondie. Which I have only heard a few times, but what the hell, Tini obviously knows the lyrics and I can read… How bad can it be?
After the electric slide line dance, we were up. (Yes, I made Tini get on stage/dance floor and do the electric slide…poor girl). I get on stage, ready to make a complete fool of myself. This way, people will talk about my craziness, instead of the nails on chalkboard voice I have.
One Way or another… we belt out. Tini is singing her heart out until…we get past the chorus. Apparently, she wasn’t too familiar with the lyrics either. Well, since I had NO idea how the non Chorus part sounded, I started making up words. Then when I got really desperate, I talked the words. Klassy!
The best part is, we got a standing ovation… ok that part was in my dreams, but we did get a few applause (ya have to love friends). Some people were laughing, I’m not sure if it was our antics or our singing… I’m going with antics.
In short, Tini got to conquer one of her fears and I got to make a fool out of myself (Nothing new there). So the next time you hear One Way or another imagine two (hotties) girls singing it at the top of their lungs while doing pelvic thrusts and waving the microphone cord around….
Did I hear Encore?

Green Beer..Yum!

St Patricks day is here again. It seems like just a few drunk weekends ago, I was celebrating the green holiday with tons of friends(they were also drunk, of course).

Last year St Patrick’s week was exhausting! I spent 12pm - 2am at downtown Orlando drinking (all the drinks were free, btw), handing out various green swag, fondling good looking guys, and being merry. (Of course I was merry, I was getting free drinks and fondling good looking guys!)

This year is going to be a bit different. Tonight I'm going out with a few friends (probably around 30 people) and drinking a beer at a local pub. Then..wait for it...I'm going home. Ahh how boring my life has become, but I'm really looking forward to getting to bed early.

Although whenever I try to get to bed early...it NEVER happens.

Regardless what you do, have a wonderful St Patrick’s day.

I just remembered, I can wear my St Patrick's day shirt from last year.

Daytona Beach Bike Week ... Rummy Style

The jabs started early. We walked into an Italian restaurant and the server said “I get it, it’s bike week…ha ha”. We were just there to use the restrooms before our annual ride through Daytona Beach for bike week. The difference between us and most everyone else is we were on bicycles not motorcycles. So instead of leather and tattoos it was those oh so cool padded spandex shorts, brightly colored wicking tops and Styrofoam helmets. With over 20 of us, we were quite the ‘biker’ gang.

I was in rare form as this is one of my favorite bike ride events. It’s mostly a social ride that culminates in several trips down Main Street, which is the strip where all the bikers hang out and watch the other bikers go by. So imagine their surprise when all the bicycles rode through. They actually seemed to enjoy our visit. I guess it was a change of pace and they could tell we were having fun. Some made little jabs like “where’s your motor”. To which we would reply “we couldn’t afford the gas”. Others made the “vroom vroom” motorcycle sounds for us. I started high fiving as I biked by which reminded me of my parade days. The bikers asked for wheelies and tricks. Being the ham that I am, I complied with some bunny hops since that’s all I can really do on a bicycle. It seemed to be enough though, since a group of (probably really drunk) bikers cheered for me like they had never seen a bunny hop before. I think maybe the tight little spandex shorts I was wearing had something to do with it.

All in all the bikers were great. They really made us feel welcome and made it a lot of fun. I can’t wait to do it again next year. In the meantime I must practice my hamming it up skills and learn how to wheelie!

Trying to kill myself with rollerblades Pt 1

Have you ever had that one thing you have ALWAYS wanted to do? It could be skydiving or jump diving, or blowing a bubble. One of my things is rollerblading.

I have a confession to make. I am one of the most UNCORDINATED people in the world. Seriously, I fall in Yoga. I can't mountain bike to save my life. Of course this doesn't deter me, but it does put into prospective how difficult it is for me to attempt rollerblading.

Step one: Get the rollerblades.
Since I've had this disare for years, I already have rollerblades with brand new wheels.

Step two: Figure out what to do next without breaking too many bones.
The main concern is to not break my hands, arms, or wrists. I wouldn't want to deprive all of you of this wonderful blog. :)

In the interest of NOT hurting myself too badly, I decided to look on YouTube for tips. I thought it was a long shot, but I'll try almost anything once. Imagine my surprise when I found some great videos regarding how to rollerblade. Hopefully this will help with my goal, to NOT kill myself.

Unfortunatly for my friends, I have enrolled their support. Little do they know how awful, I mean novice I am.

My first stop is the roller rink and strangely enough a friend volunteered to go with me. I either have some great friends, or Masochists.

Check back soon for the Roller rink story, If i'm not in a body cast of course.

Vane About Veins

Every year lately I do a little something special to keep me looking young. In the past I’ve tried whitening my teeth, scar cream and cellulite cream. The teeth whitening worked, for a couple years at least, but I had my mouth pulled so far apart for two hours while they were doing it that I swear it doubled the amount of wrinkles on my lips. The scar cream did absolutely nothing but remind me I had scars as I rubbed them every day. But that’s ok since they actually bring back good memories since many of my scars are from my sports and adventures. The cellulite cream did absolutely nothing but give me an excuse to get my boyfriend to rub my backside.

But even with this bad luck I decided to try again. This time I was attacking my spider veins. I’ve had them since I was 16 but I decided it was finally time to tell them “hasta la vista baby”! So I made an appointment at a clinic that performs all kinds of elective surgeries. It was very apparent from the moment I got on property that this was not ‘my scene’. I had the worst car in the parking lot but that’s usually true no matter where I go…even at the Salvation Army. I ventured in the clinic and all the women inside were perfect looking in a high maintenance sort of way with all the latest accessories and big puffy lips while I was in sweats and with my hair in a pony tail. The shots were somewhat painful but I’m tough and willing to make the sacrifice in the name of beauty. (Men really should appreciate all that we go through to look good for them!) Following my elective ‘surgery’ I had to wear ace bandages for 2 days. Most places provide compression hose but not my upscale clinic. All I got was ace bandages and I spent the next 2 days with very heavy looking legs under my pants and having to constantly pull up and readjust the bandages.

They tell you it will take weeks for the veins to fade and that multiple injections are required. Well it’s been two months now and some of the veins did go away but the majority did not. So now it’s decision time. Do I try again? Do I give up and accept my slightly purpled legs that really look fine with a tan in summer anyway? I’m leaning toward one more visit. After all I don’t want to be labeled a quitter!

Even if I do decide to go back for a second round, I learned a long time ago that the best things to keep me young are exercise, a playful attitude, new adventures and eating healthy. So if you’re in the mood to improve yourself I recommend these things first. They are more fun and much less painful too!

My Ass Hurts!

Fan-Tab-U-LOUS blog readers…. My Ass hurts! No, it’s not the reason you think, no back door action has been happening (dirty mind readers…how I love thee!), I went mountain biking…again. Can you say a glutton for punishment? It all started with the boyfriend (that LOVES mountain biking) and an Eleanor Roosevelt quote “Do something that scares you every day.” After my first experience mountain biking…it now scares me, or did. After my first, VERY painful attempt at mountain biking, I thought I would NEVER try it again. It just goes to show you…Never say NEVER!Besides all of my bitching regarding my Ass, I’m in pretty good shape, only a few bruises & scrapes. Also, the surprise of surprises… I enjoyed riding my borrowed mountain bike on the trails. Yes, it was soo hot it was like summer in Hell and my Ass still hurts DAYS later…but I enjoyed it.A wonderful friend rode with me on the “easy” trails & chatted the whole time. This actually helped, since the chatting kept me from realizing that my ass felt like it was on FIRE!
Seriously, I had a good time all and all. Here is the real kicker…I’m going to buy a mountain bike. OH MY GOD, I think I’ve just fallen off the Looney truck!
Tomorrow, check out the Top 10 things you need when you go mountain biking

Hookers and Hikers, Buttes and Bikers

I know you must be wondering what the strange title means. Well it’s an intro to my latest vacation of course. My boyfriend and I went on a 7-day epic journey covering 4 states and too many miles to count….even for an engineer.

It all started in Las Vegas, which is where the hooker comes in. I knew it was legal there but I was surprised at how much advertisement there was for it. We past a guy in an orange shirt that said “Direct to your Door in 30 minutes”. I decided it would be fun to take a picture with him since legally picking up a hook seemed so extreme due to my naïve upbringing. Well I didn’t realize that I was wearing an orange shirt too and so the picture looks like I am one of his “employees”. I better not let my mom see that picture! We decided our $40 would be better spent on an all you can eat buffet so we went to the Bellagio hotel for their world famous buffet. It was the best buffet I have ever had in both quantity and quality! We stayed for TWO hours. Six plates and eight desserts later we finally waddled out. “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas”? Can someone please inform my hips of this! At the time I decided we were “training” for day two of the journey, which involved a hike down Grand Canyon so the carbs were necessary to prep. It sounded good at the time.

On day two we journeyed to the Grand Canyon and started our hike down. We didn’t prep except for eating bunches in Vegas and we didn’t know if what we were doing was commonplace or not. Being from Florida where the elevation is zero is sure seemed extreme. At least gravity was on our side but it still took 4 ½ hours to get down. Some of that was due to needing a picture every 10 feet. It was beautiful and we wanted to document it all. The best part was we didn’t finish the hike until after dark. The last two miles were in complete darkness with just a little flashlight to help us not fall off the trail and into the Colorado River. It worked and we made it to the ranch for the best dinner ever….or maybe I was just very hungry. After dinner I went to the girls camp to sleep with a bunch of women I didn’t know. I was a little nervous about this but my boyfriend informed me he did it all the time and it was easy. He didn’t earn any girlfriend points with that little comment. But I met the girls in the morning and they were awesome and we became instant friends.

Unfortunately what goes down must come up and on day three we journeyed up the canyon. As the signs all stated getting to the bottom was optional but getting up was mandatory so we were on our own. We were laughing in the morning how we made it through the heat and decent and the dark and the only thing missing was torrential rain. It was a joke at the time since it was totally sunny but by lunchtime it started to downpour. We just kept on hiking since there really wasn’t much else to do and as it turned out it probably helped us since it would have been too hot without the rain. We ran into one of those odd people we meet on every trip. You know the ones who like to act like they know it all and like to share their opinion even if you obviously aren’t interested. When we mentioned we were from Florida he said “well congratulations, most of MY people from Florida can’t make it” in a very derogatory tone. So I decided to mess with his head and said “really. This was easy. We have this ride at Disney World….except its air-conditioned”. That seemed to put him in his place or at least confuse him enough so we could get away. It really wasn’t too bad of a journey. We just went slow and steady and a mere 8 ½ hours later we were up! We had some soreness and blisters but we didn’t fall in the canyon so that makes it a total success in my mind.

The Buttes come into play on Day 4 when we went to monument valley Utah. There are huge rock formations called buttes and mesas just jutting out of the ground. It was spectacular to view. I found a rock that had the best echo I’ve ever heard. I could almost recite the preamble to the US Constitution and hear it all repeated back to me. We took some pictures, did some yoga poses and had a small snack while we soaked it all in. I only wish I could have done a full yoga class in that location.

Day 5 brings us to the biker part of my title since we mountain biked down a mountain at a ski/snowboard resort. I’ve done mountain biking before but usually you have to spend a lot of time biking up just to enjoy a quick downhill. Most bikers like to say “you have to earn it” when talking about the downhill but I figure if I pay for the lift ticket then “I earned it”! We used the ski lift to go up the mountain which felt odd without a board on my feet and then the bikes were hooked to the back of the next chairs. So we spent all day chair lifting up and biking down. All the fun without all the work and I am totally ok with that!

These were just a few of the many highlights from our epic journey to the West. I love vacations since they are a time of adventure and a time of living in the moment and they create lifelong memories. I hope you enjoyed my vacation as much as I did and that you get a chance to travel soon and make many wonderful memories to last a lifetime!

Look! Up in the Sky - It’s a bird, It’s a plane…it’s a kite board!

I’ve always thought I was special and my mom has always confirmed this but I'm not sure I fall into the elite top 1%. I’m referring to my newly attempted hobby of kite boarding. My friend/trainer who excels at kite boarding describes it as “absolutely positively the wrong sport for 99% of the population”. In case you don’t know about kite boarding or kite surfing it involves a big kite that uses the wind to propel you on a board through the water. You will probably see someone attempting this if you get to the beach on a slightly windy day anytime soon. Plus you can kite on land and ice so you may see the big colorful kites on non-beachy areas as well. I’ve wanted to try this sport for years so I was happy when I finally met someone who could teach me. I usually don’t need lessons when I take up a new sport but this one seems more complicated than most. So far I’m falling into the 99% category since I’m a bit scared of all the power you can get from the wind and the weather never seems to be quite right when I finally make the hour long drive to the beach. But I haven’t given up yet. I have a dream…that one day I will be able to get up on a kite board for at least a few feet. I’ll keep you posted. But even if I never get up on the board it’s still been a positive experience. I've had fun learning to fly the kite on the beach and getting dragged in the water, I've made some new friends and I've learned to pay more attention to wind speed and direction. I recommend trying a new sport or hobby to everyone as a good way to learn something new and keep life interesting and challenging. Perhaps just not kite boarding.

Born To Be Mild

Riding motorcycles is such a rush but I don’t ride too often since it’s just too dangerous. Perhaps I’m cautious since I’m still recovering from being hit in the head by a car on my bicycle last year. But for some reason all bets are off when I’m on vacation so I rented a Yamaha 175 in Jamaica and took my chances. A third world country with horrible health care, two lane bumpy roads with constant passing, riding on the left side of the road, limited motorcycle skills and probably half of all drivers high from the ganja….what could possibly go wrong?????? Well thankfully no serious injuries occurred and it was the best day of my vacation. I felt safer riding a motorcycle in Jamaica than I would in the US. There are lots of motorcycles in Jamaica so most cars know to look out for them and are respectful and courteous. Cars would wait to pass and give a nice beep to let you know they were passing and give you plenty of room. In a full day of riding motorcycles only two cars passed a little too close for comfort and one ironically enough was an ambulance. It was an exciting day that I will have great memories of for a long time to come. Assuming of course I don’t get any more head injuries! It was so much fun that I’m considering getting my motorcycle license. But we’ll see since I’m still a bit of a sissy.

New Experience

“So you are my girlfriend” Tic Tac said while grabbing my hand.Since we are not a couple, I looked confusingly at Tic Tac and said “What…?” while letting go of his hand.“They won’t let you in if you are not with a guy” Tic Tac patiently informed me.Stupidly I replied “Oh…” and grabbed his hand.
Tic Tac, his brother Stoli and I walked in to this club. It was a little strange acting like Tic Tac’s girlfriend but since I had a few drinks by this time, I was very kewl with it.
A guy wearing a Tux greets us at the door. Since it had been a while since I had seen a guy with a bow tie, I hesitated a few moments. At that exact moment, Tini called…or did I call her…Who knows, like I said, I had a few drinks.Side note: We invented a new drink that night called Tic Tac Cream. (www. drinkswiththegirls.com/drink_recipes)“On my way girl” Tini said over the cell phone.“Awesome, I just did not want to be the only girl here…well you know what I mean” I said.“I will be there in a few minutes” Tini reassured me.“Kewl” I replied.
Walking in with my new “Boyfriend” sights and sounds attacked my attention. Oh…did I mention that when I drink I have the attention span of a Nat. Yeah..I can’t pay attention to anything for very long, hence I was looking around like a tourist at Disney world.Tic Tac and Stoli took me to the bar and asked what I would like to drink. While looking around like a crazed Disney tourist, I replied “A water and a beer”I noticed a girl sitting by herself next to the stage. I proceeded sit next to her and start talking. I was just chatting away, saying things like “I have never been to a place like this before” and a few other things that I can’t remember. After a few moments she said, well I have to go on stage; I will talk to you later.I went off to find Tic Tac and Stoli, not hard to do mind you (It was small place). They looked a little worried because I was sitting in the VIP section (little did I know), but no worries, the bouncers didn’t seem to mind.Tic Tac took me to the chairs right in front of the stage. I sat back and just took it all in. Mostly naked 19-25 year old women dancing away, men were drooling and trying to look kewl (btw, it is impossible to do both at the same time!). I thought I might be a little shocked or uncomfortable…but not at all. The strip club was not dirty or gross. It was a small noisy club with women taking their clothes off. Not a big deal at all. In fact, it was very interesting over all.1st off most of the women did not have huge breasts. Some were an A cup…I was very surprised.2nd the Bathroom was located in the strippers dressing room. This ruins some of the magic seeing them in the light & hearing them talk like someone on Jerry Springer or cheaters.3rd the girls moves were not all that. I expected…well I’m not really sure. But I thought I would take some knowledge home with me. There were a few things that were interesting. Like Micka (the girl I talked to in the VIP section), she could throw ice off her back.So after a few hours, we left. It was a very interesting experience to say the least.
My advice, if you have an open mind & you have never been to a strip club, find a good one is in your area & go! Oh & bring a “Boyfriend” since many of them won’t let you in without one.
